Singing

We welcome singing students that are children and young people, adults who have been practising singing for a longer time and students who want to become professional singers. Our educational institute provides singers with excellent capabilities for applying to universities of applied sciences in the music sector and the Sibelius Academy, for example.

Classical singing

Turku Conservatory admits students of classical singing whose voices have already changed at puberty and who are talented and enthusiastic about singing. The applicants are required to be goal-oriented in music studies.

Our classical singing students get to practise in private, weekly singing lessons and lessons with accompanying music. You work together with a pianist in the latter ones. In vocational upper secondary education and training, the studies also include working in the Lied and opera studio.

At our educational institution, students also gain experience in stage work and working with an orchestra. We have put on several opera productions and musicals both as our own productions and together with various parties – from Lloyd Webber’s Evita to Mozart’s Magic flute.

Our singers are continuously taking on significant positions in the most important choirs in the Turku region, such as Key Ensemble, Musicians of the King’s Road, CCA, Mieskuoro Naskalit, University of Turku choir and Brahe Djäknar. Our students and alumni are also in several vocal groups.

Singing instruction for children and young people

Children and young people who are interested in singing are directed to singing education primarily through group teaching and choir activities.

You can also study singing as a major or minor subject from the age of approximately 10. The aim of singing instruction before the child’s voice has changed through puberty is to guide them to find a natural way to express themselves and their feelings through song. During the lessons, students familiarise themselves with the conscious management of their own song instrument through a good singing posture and naturally deep breathing. The instruction pays attention to how freely and easily the voice carries, how pure it is and how clearly they can sing the lyrics. The students learn about the interpretation and expression of song by using software that is suitable for their age and skill level to perform on their own and play music together with others in the Lied course for children, for example, where singers and pianists of the same age work together.

Pop and jazz singing

Individual classes of pop and jazz singing under the basic education in the arts are suitable for primary school children upwards – there is no upper age limit. The teachers of Turku Conservatory have versatile expertise in areas such as pop, rock, folk music, schlager, jazz, improvisation and musical theatre.

In pop/jazz lessons:

– you get to know your own voice and how to control it under the teacher’s encouraging guidance.

– you practise economical and ergonomic use of voice.

– you can practise a wide range of songs in different rhythmic music styles.

– you will learn different ways of using your voice.

– you can practice singing alone, harmonising and as part of a group.

– support the student’s own interests and musical projects.

– offer a chance to practise performing, microphone technology and singing with a sound system.

If you wish, you can receive guidance for goal-oriented practical training and coaching to pass an entrance examination to vocational studies or to take part in a song competition.

Depending on the teacher and the selection of the courses, students also have the opportunity to practise accompanying their own singing, songwriting and using music technology (recording and DAW).

In addition to training with instruments, students are encouraged to apply for group teaching at their level, such as to join a band, vocal group or choir. They should also study music perception. Your teacher can help you select a group at the right level.
