Percussion instruments

Percussion instruments are a traditional and highly versatile group of instruments. They can be sub-categorised as metal, wood and membranophone percussion instruments and melodic and effect percussions.

Drums and other percussion instruments are one of the oldest and most traditional groups of instruments. The most well-known percussion instruments include kettledrums, gongs, cymbals and xylophones, as well as drums and percussions that give rhythm to pop and jazz music.

In symphony orchestras, percussion players usually control several instruments from within their group of instruments, as different compositions require different percussion instruments to accent and rhythm the piece.

In pop and jazz music, it is important to learn about different drums, to understand how to combine them and which drumsticks to select.
