Choir Activities

The choir activities at our institution are fun, community-building, and open up new opportunities. We organize preparatory choir activities for children, and our institution also features several choirs for singers of different ages.

Students of the Turku Conservatory can sign up for choir activities without a separate audition. The vocal range and skill level of new singers will be assessed during the activities. At the same time, information about the choir’s content and the upcoming semester will be provided.

In accordance with the curriculum, choir activities enable making music together and performing. Registration for the choir is for one academic year at a time.

In addition to weekly rehearsals, choir activities include weekend rehearsals or camp days, and performances during both the autumn and spring semesters. The choirs also frequently perform together with the institution’s orchestras and bands. These will always be announced separately. To apply for choirs, click here.

Preparatory Choir Lauluaakkoset

Lauluaakkoset is intended for children aged 6–9 who are starting choir singing as a hobby. The activities introduce the basics of choir singing and teach vocal production through games and functional exercises. We perform regularly with other Turku Conservatory choirs.

During the 2026–2027 academic year, Lauluaakkoset will rehearse in two groups at the Mestarinkatu location in the Small Hall (Pieni sali).

Lauluaakkoset I on Mondays from 17:30 to 18:15 This group is intended for new singers with no prior experience in choir singing. The group operates as its own unit throughout the academic year.

Lauluaakkoset II on Tuesdays from 16:30 to 17:15 This group is intended for children who have previously participated in Lauluaakkoset. The activities focus on rounds (canons) and 1–2-part singing. The group frequently works together with the Children’s Choir Auriella.

Lauluaakkoset is directed by Maria Jaakkonen.

Children’s Choir Auriella

Auriella is a choir for children and young teens (ages 8–14). As a prerequisite for the children’s choir, participation in the preparatory choir or basic music-reading skills acquired through other music studies is recommended. In the children’s choir, we practice part-singing and explore different musical styles and body percussion. Prior choir experience is not required; a desire to sing together with others and a willingness to learn is enough.

During the 2026–2027 academic year, Auriella will rehearse at the Mestarinkatu in the Small Hall on Tuesdays from 17:30 to 19:00.

During the 2026–2027 academic year, the choir will be directed by Tuire Mellanen and Maria Jaakkonen.

Pop/Jazz Choir Rytmis

is a treble choir intended for adults (20+), where we practice vocal techniques for rhythmic music, learn to sing together in harmony, focus on rhythmics, and practice solo singing. The feel-good choir Rytmis was founded in autumn 2025 at the request of adult students. Prior choir experience is an advantage in Rytmis, but not required. The repertoire consists of rhythmic music pieces in various styles. The skill level and repertoire are determined annually based on the participants’ proficiency.

During the 2026–2027 academic year, Rytmis will rehearse on Mondays from 18:30 to 20:00 in the Small Hall at Mestarinkatu.

The choir is directed by Tuire Mellanen and Maria Jaakkonen.
