Robert Ruohola: Kalevala, first poem

Saturday 28.02.2026 klo 19.00
Martinkirkko | Tickets 25 / 15 €

Want to enjoy powerful folk poetry and the voices of a hundred singers? On Kalevala Day, your wish will come true when almost a hundred musicians interpret the birth story of our national epic in a packed concert in the world premiere of Robert Ruohola’s new work. “Kalevala: First Poem” will be performed on Saturday 28 February 2026 at 19.00 at Martinkirkko in Turku.

The texts of the Kalevala have been recited and sung since time immemorial, but the first poem of the work has never before been used as the basis for a complete composition. Robert Ruohola, a composer from Turku, began working on the subject with local choirs, and the collaboration slowly developed into a larger work for three choirs.

The Turku Conservatory Chamber Choir, Florakören, Naskalit Male Voice Choir and kantele artist Senni Eskelinen fill the church hall with music, and group choreographies visualised by the composer use the space of the Martinkirkko to surround the audience from all sides. The unprecedentedly immersive performance is led by a trio of artistic directors, Viena Kangas, Hanna Kronqvist and Niklas Taanila, instead of a single conductor.
