Pop and jazz music
At Turku Conservatory, pop and jazz music education is based on individual instruction with the main and secondary instrument. There are various band workshops that improve the diverse skills of a musician.
What do the studies cover?
Instrument and singing studies
The pop and jazz department of Turku Conservatory teaches various skills and phenomena of rhythmic music. The activities are focused on playing music together. Each student takes private lessons with their main and secondary instrument and attends band workshops. As a large and versatile educational institution, our range of instruments is very extensive.
A wide range of other courses
In addition to instrument studies, there are subjects that support the practical work of a musician and a life playing gigs, such as music perception, music technology and information and communication technology. In addition, students can also take subjects from our institution’s wide range of subjects that support their future career path. Check out our list of subjects here. The many projects and productions of the educational institution are a nice addition to the studies. We have joint projects with the other departments of the institution, such as musical productions, entertainment concerts, the Skaalat solmuun festival and the summertime Pooki fest.
Songwriter emphasis
The vocational studies of a pop/jazz musician with a songwriter emphasis (180 competence points) combine both the basic vocational studies of a musician and studies tailored for songwriters. In other words, you will learn the basic skills of a pop/jazz musician but also knowledge and skills that are necessary for a songwriter. More information on the songwriter emphasis.
How do the studies progress?
In the early stages, the studies focus on workshops. The topics of the workshops include dance, pop and rock, Latin and jazz music, among others. The workshops finish with a gig held at a restaurant in the Turku region. As the studies progress, they are increasingly based on workplace-oriented learning through gigs, and the venues also determine which material the students will practise and present. We have numerous partners for venues, such as Viking Line cruises and Apollo restaurants. Learn more about our working life partners and gig venues.
