Music education for people with special needs

People with special needs are offered individual instruction in music and singing. There are study groups for ensemble playing and for learning about music perception and music technology.

The aim of music and singing instruction for students with special needs is to support the establishment of a musical relationship and study music with a goal in mind, drawing on the student’s strengths and abilities. The personalised curriculum takes into account the student’s special characteristics and possible limitations. Music education for people with special needs is provided both as individual and/or group instruction. Students can apply for individual instruction when applying for basic education in the arts during the spring, autumn and end-of-year application periods. New students are usually first directed to individual instruction and, as their studies progress, also to suitable ensemble playing groups. The selection of instruments is the same as in other basic education in the arts.

Individual instruction

Individual lessons focus on training with a specific instrument or a song and gaining skills that support music learning. The methods of music education for people with special needs, such as figurenotes, can be utilised in the instruction. If the student has not chosen an instrument in their application, their individual lessons can start by trying different instruments and taking time to consider which one to choose together with the teacher.

Ensemble playing groups

Generally, 3–6 students without guardians or assistants participate in the ensemble playing groups for students with special needs. Two teachers guide the group. Each group session lasts 45–75 minutes. The groups are formed in each school year, taking into account the age and skill levels of the students involved in the activities.

Other teaching groups

In music perception subjects or music technology, students with special needs can join groups related to the basic education in the arts, or if necessary, they can be taught in pairs or small groups according to a personalised study plan. You can sign up to the groups in spring.
