Turku Conservatory’s composition competition results declared at the Independence Day matinee

December 8, 2025

The Turku Conservatory has honoured the 80th anniversary of the Finnish Composers’ Society by presenting new Finnish art music in its student concerts and in the teachers’ Timantti Series. In addition, composers Tytti Arola, Aino Tenkanen, Robert Ruohola and Lauri Mäntysaari have visited groups during the autumn to lead various small-scale workshops and supervise preparations for performances of their own compositions.

The importance of composition has also been highlighted by the Turku Conservatory’s Composition Competition 2025, which had three categories. The adult series was open to all composers living in Finland. The youth series for 15-18 year olds and under 15 year olds was limited to young people from Southwest Finland. The adult series was intended to offer young musicians new and inspiring chamber music repertoire with an educational aspect. In the youth series, the topic was free. A total of 33 participants took part in the competition. The jury consisted of the composers Tytti, Aino, Robert and Lauri mentioned above.

The adult category was won by Christoffer Pörn with Pulse 3: Constellation (€1500), second prize went to Lauri Toivio with Stardust for two violins (€1000) and third place was shared between Leevi Räsänen’s Cat String Quartet and Christian Holmqvist’s Danza Desolato (€500 each).

The Youth category was won by Alma Meretoja with Un etude sur un mirage d’amour (€300) and second place went to Nella Lehtiö with Kultaiset pilvet (€200).

The children’s category was won by Jooseppi Pyykkö with the Forte trio (€100 gift voucher) and second prize went to Amos Nyman with Viuluduo (€50 gift voucher).

The prizes of the Turku Conservatory Composition Competition 2025 were covered by the Turku Conservatory Support Foundation. The composer Mikko Heiniö was the patron of the event.
